Privacy, Terms & Permissions
Everything legal in one place. Last updated October 1, 2026.
Privacy Policy
Reelic is built to be private by default. The Chrome extension reads the Instagram saves page that you already see in your browser, indexes the captions, hashtags, and creator handles locally, and gives you a search layer on top.
What stays on your device
Your full saved reels library (captions, thumbnails, creator handles, hashtags, and timestamps) is stored in your browser using IndexedDB. Reelic also uses Chrome's storage API to remember your Instagram username and sync progress so a sync can pause and resume. Uninstalling the extension or clearing your browser data removes all of it.
What we send to our server
The Global Leaderboard, Taste Twin, and community stats are a core part of Reelic and run on a Supabase backend. When you agree to this policy on the Privacy & Terms screen (see Data Sharing), you agree that each time you sync your saved reels, Reelic sends the following to that backend:
- Your Instagram username.
- Summary stats: total reels saved, number of unique creators, weekly average, streak, personal record, curator tier, curation style, and monthly save trends.
- Your top 50 creators and top 50 hashtags, with counts.
- Your most saved audio tracks (title and artist).
- Up to 100 of your saved reels, with each reel's ID, creator handle, first 60 characters of the caption, hashtags, view, like and comment counts, duration, and the creator's public profile picture link.
- The list of IDs of the reels you have saved, used to work out which reels you share with other curators.
- Your approximate region (country and state), worked out from your device's time zone. We never use GPS or your IP address for this.
We use this data only to run Reelic's leaderboard, Taste Twin, and community insights, and to improve Reelic. We do not sell it, share it with advertisers, or use it for anything unrelated to Reelic.
Who can see it
Other Reelic users see your username, saved reel count, leaderboard stats, and the names of your top 10 creators and hashtags, which power Taste Twin. Everything else listed above, including your region, saved reels, and saved reel IDs, can only be viewed by Reelic admins after signing in with a verified admin account. Other users never download your saved reel list. Our server only tells each user which of their own reels someone else has also saved.
How we protect it
The first time you sync, your browser creates a random secret. Our server stores only a scrambled (hashed) copy, and only the browser holding that secret can update your leaderboard profile. The server checks and cleans every update and limits how often profiles are created and updated. To stop spam, when a new profile is created we keep a scrambled copy of the network address it came from for up to 24 hours, and use it for nothing else.
What we don't collect
- No login credentials. Reelic never sees your Instagram password.
- No DMs, stories, or private posts. Only your saved reels.
- No browsing history outside Instagram.
- No third-party analytics, tracking scripts, or advertising identifiers in the extension.
Children's privacy
Reelic is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under that age.
Your choices
Leaderboard sharing is part of using Reelic. To stop sharing, uninstall the extension, which stops all future uploads. You can delete your local data at any time by uninstalling Reelic or clearing your browser data. To delete data already stored on our server, contact us via the Support page with your Instagram username and we will remove it.
This policy reflects how Reelic is built today. If we change anything that affects how your data is handled, we'll update this page and bump the date at the top.
Data Sharing & Consent
The first time you open Reelic, and whenever this policy changes in a way that affects your data, Reelic shows a Privacy & Terms screen. You need to make a choice on it before you continue.
What the screen asks
One checkbox: that you have read and agree to this Privacy Policy and the Terms of Use, including sharing your stats to the Global Leaderboard. The screen lists exactly what is shared before you agree, and links back to What we send to our server.
Why sharing is part of Reelic
The Global Leaderboard, Taste Twin, and community insights only work when curators share their stats, so sharing is part of agreeing to use Reelic rather than a separate option. Your full saved reels library and your searches still stay on your device.
If you don't agree
Reelic can't be used without agreeing, and nothing is sent until you do. You can uninstall the extension at any time.
Stopping sharing
Uninstall Reelic to stop all future uploads. To remove data already on our server, contact us via the Support page with your Instagram username. You can re-read this policy at any time from Privacy & Terms in the Reelic dashboard menu.
Terms of Use
Before you first use Reelic, you are asked to accept these terms on the Privacy & Terms screen. By using Reelic, you agree to them.
The extension
Reelic is provided free of charge during the open beta. You may use it for personal, non-commercial purposes. We may add a paid tier in the future for power users; if we do, current users will get notice and an opt-in.
Your account & data
Reelic does not require an account. The only identifier we store is your Instagram username, as described in the Privacy Policy above. You can ask us to delete it at any time.
Acceptable use
- Don't use Reelic to scrape, harvest, or redistribute other people's data.
- Don't attempt to reverse-engineer the leaderboard to harm other users.
- Don't use Reelic in a way that violates Instagram's Terms of Service or any applicable law.
Disclaimer
Reelic is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We don't guarantee that the extension will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with future changes to Instagram's page structure. Instagram may change its layout at any time, which can temporarily break indexing until we ship an update.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Reelic and its contributors are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the extension.
Changes
We may update these terms. Material changes will be highlighted on this page and announced in the extension.
Permissions
Reelic requests the minimum permissions needed to do its job. Here's every permission it asks for and why.
storageRemembers your Instagram username and sync progress so a sync can pause and resume between sessions. Your reel library itself is stored on your device in IndexedDB.
unlimitedStorageRemoves Chrome's default 5 MB quota so that large libraries (10k+ saved reels) can be indexed without running out of space.
sidePanelOpens the Reelic side panel inside Chrome so you can search without leaving the page you're on.
Host: https://www.instagram.com/*Lets Reelic read the saved-reels page that Instagram already renders in your browser. We only run on Instagram pages you visit, never in the background.
Host: https://*.cdninstagram.com/*Downloads thumbnail images for your saved reels from Instagram's CDN so they can be cached on your device.
Host: https://*.supabase.co/*Sends the leaderboard data described in the Privacy Policy to our Supabase backend each time you sync, after you agree on the Privacy & Terms screen.
We will never silently add new permissions. Any new permission request will require you to re-approve the extension in Chrome.
